Nikko Sea Tiger

No, I could not resist. I saw this toy RC sub in a magazine for pool products and it was on sale......

Here's the radio control box (left/right thruster forward or backward) and the sub itself. The sub is about 6 inches long.

Detail of the Sea Tiger. I have not yet tried this sub out, it is back into its box and waits for me to visit a pool in the summer.

Resin Casting Masters

This section shows two wooden hull masters made by Jerry O Leih. The masters are used to make moulds to cast resin models. This is truly beautiful work!
Jerry O Leih

This ALPHA is 1/350 scale (about an inch in diameter), and was done almost entirely from photo interpretation using pencil and paper.

The Nautilus is 1/200th, is about 7 inches long, and was done from plans. The Rivets are JB-Weld epoxy (a two part metal structural adhesive) and were put on one dot at a time with a small length of brass wire. The Nautilus has 3 moulds.  The upper and lower hull are separate moulds/castings, with the middle, transverse section mould/casting containing all the separate pieces:  Rudder, prop, boat, circular prop guard, 2 side windows, anchors.  Commercially available hemispherical "mirrors" (from women's craft stores) will be the eyes and side windows.

Build your own underwater robot

This great book by Harry Bohm and Vickie Jensen contains various underwater projects and describes the construction of two remotely operated underwater vehicles. The book is aimed at upper elementary or middle school students but it is certainly also a lot of fun for grownups.
