The U 21 is a German diesel electric submarine and is one of the oldest boats still operational in the German navy. The pictures were taken in March 1998 when the U 21 was on its way for maneuvers. Probably it paused in Amsterdam so that its crew could enjoy the wonderful nightlife of this beautiful city. Notice the small displacement of the boat when compared to the other boats on this web site. After World War II, Germany was not allowed to build large submarines.
