Vanguard
Vanguard class boat at sea, picture from the web.

On this page, the building of a model Vanguard class boat is presented. This is my latest project and I will be using a new technique for the hull construction. First the hull will be made out of foam material and it will later be used to make a mold for the final glasfiber/epoxy hull.

The foam material: extruded polystyrene. It is used for home insulation and is available in 3/4, 1 and 2 inch thickness. I'll be using the one inch plates. Extruded polystyrene is much more rigid and has a finer structure than polystyrene used for packaging material.

Photocopied bulkheads glued to the foam.

Cutting bulkheads is a breeze. Note that the saw table is placed under an angle. For each bulkhead the angle is different so that the shape of the hull is followed.

The first series of twenty bulkheads fitted onto an aluminum rod.

The plans of the Vanguard were drawn by Jecobin and are distributed by White Ensign Models

Ah yes, as the model is not yet finished, this page is under construction!
